China Calls on EU to Act on Paris Climate Goals

(MENAFN) On Monday, China called on the European Union to honor its commitments under the Paris climate agreement, emphasizing that environmental cooperation forms a cornerstone of their bilateral relationship.

During a press briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated, “Both sides actively support low-carbon transition and green development, firmly uphold the international climate governance system.”

Mao pointed out the broad shared interests and vast potential for joint efforts between China and the EU in tackling climate change, underscoring that the issue impacts all humanity and requires unified global action.

“China, while adjusting its energy mix and pursuing green development, is also working closely with the rest of the world to actively contribute to global climate governance,” Mao explained, according to the official transcript.

She drew attention to landmark collaborative projects such as the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station, Greece’s Thrace Wind Project, and Germany’s Dollen solar park as key symbols of the green partnership between China and Europe.

“China is committed to green and low-carbon development,” Mao stated, revealing that non-fossil fuels now account for 17.9% of China’s energy consumption and that the country’s carbon intensity has decreased by more than 34% over the last ten years.

Her comments followed media speculation that the EU might postpone a joint climate statement with China unless Beijing agrees to more stringent emissions reductions.

“We stand ready to work with the EU to uphold multilateralism, fulfill the goals identified in the Paris Agreement, strengthen cooperation on mitigation and adaptation and green and low-carbon transition, and contribute to better global climate governance,” Mao added.

In contrast, the United States exited the Paris Agreement in January, with President Donald Trump declaring that Washington “will not sabotage our own industries while China pollutes with impunity.”
