China Defends Canada Ties Amid Trump’s Bridge Threats

(MENAFN) China on Wednesday responded to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump regarding a bridge project linking Ontario and Michigan, emphasizing that its partnership with Canada is rooted in mutual respect and shared benefit.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said, “China and Canada have established a new type of strategic cooperation.”

He explained that the relationship is based on principles of fairness and inclusivity. “This reflects equality, openness and inclusiveness, peaceful cooperation and shared benefit. It does not cover any third party,” Lin added.

According to Lin, the collaboration between Beijing and Ottawa advances the interests of both nations’ citizens and contributes positively to broader global stability. He stated that the partnership “serves the common interests of the people of both countries and is conducive to world peace, stability, development and prosperity.”

His comments followed criticism from Trump earlier in the week regarding the newly constructed bridge between Ontario and Michigan. The US president claimed the structure was built with “virtually no US content” and signaled opposition to its opening under current conditions.

Trump warned that the bridge would remain closed unless certain US demands are satisfied. “I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the fairness and respect that we deserve,” he said.
