China Demands Respect, Equality as Trump Kicks Off State Visit

(MENAFN) China extended a formal welcome Wednesday to US President Donald Trump ahead of his state visit to Beijing, calling for bilateral ties grounded in mutual respect while framing the high-stakes trip as an opportunity to bring greater stability to an increasingly uncertain world.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters that heads-of-state diplomacy carries an "irreplaceable role" in setting the strategic direction of China-US relations — a pointed signal of how seriously Beijing is approaching the visit.

China "welcomes President Trump's state visit to China," Guo Jiakun said, noting that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping "will exchange views on major issues concerning China-US relations and world peace and development."

"The two sides will act in the spirit of respect, equality and mutual benefits and provide more stability and certainty to the world," he added.

Trump is scheduled to remain in China from Wednesday through Friday — marking the first visit by a sitting American president in nearly nine years. The agenda is dense and consequential, with the Middle East conflict, Taiwan, trade, tariffs, and high-tech competition all expected to feature prominently in discussions.

The delegation is notably heavy on corporate firepower, with a number of prominent CEOs accompanying the president. First Lady Melania Trump, however, will not be part of the trip.

Prior to departure, Trump signaled his intentions clearly, stating he would make his "very first request" to Xi to "open up" China to American business.

"I have never seen or heard of any idea that would be more beneficial to our incredible Countries," he noted.
