The First Ordinary Plenary Meeting of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions in 2026

MACAU, October 12 - The first ordinary plenary meeting of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions in 2026 was convened on 6 October, chaired by Ng Wai Han, Secretary for Economy and Finance and Chairman of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions. The Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (“IPIM”) introduced the latest developments in Macao’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry, and two forthcoming MICE support schemes set to bolster the competitiveness of local MICE industry. Meanwhile, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Co-operation Zone in Hengqin (hereinafter referred to as the “Co-operation Zone”) presented the information of Hengqin International Convention and Exhibition Center and associated operational plans. Committee members also exchanged views on the future development of Macao’s MICE industry.

Secretary Ng Wai Han urged the new committee members to make full use of their professional expertise and extensive experience to collectively improve the quality development of Macao’s MICE industry, thereby contributing to the appropriately diversified economy in Macao. She emphasised that Macao’s MICE industry, as one of the “1+4” key industries, plays a significant role in the development of service industry, investment promotion and expansion of market collaboration. While the sector consolidates its existing strengths, it should also pro-actively align with the national “15th Five-Year Plan” strategy. By seizing development opportunities such as the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, local MICE stakeholders should constantly expand their international co-operation networks in Portuguese-speaking, Spanish-speaking, and Southeast Asian markets. They should not only deepen regional partnerships, but also leverage the MICE platform’s outreach to connect markets, foster collaborations, and cater to industry needs.

Giving Full Play to the Platform Role of the MICE, Macao and Hengqin Joining Hands to Bolster the Strategy among Industries

In her speech, Secretary Ng pointed out three major tasks: Firstly, improving the functions of the international platform and enhancing the competitiveness of Macao’s MICE brand. Local MICE stakeholders should continue to strengthen collaborations with international MICE organisers and professional entities, actively bidding for more prominent MICE projects with global influence and industry-driving force to be hosted in Macao. Secondly, giving full play to capabilities of the MICE platform to empower the development of the “1+4” industries. Centred on fostering the integration of “Industries + MICE,” it is crucial to actively harness the platform impact of key brand MICE events, striving to broaden innovative business models within the MICE industry to attract more high-value-added consumers and those with higher spending power to Macao. Thirdly, enhancing the joint development of Macao and Hengqin to create a more competitive international MICE platform. The “Multi-venue Event” model should be enriched to encourage more MICE events to be held in Macao and Hengqin, seamlessly amalgamating forums, business matching sessions, industry dialogues, and company site visits.

Two Key Schemes Bring Fresh Energy into the Qualitative Development of the MICE Industry

IPIM President and Secretary-General of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions Che Weng Keong presented an overview of Macao’s MICE industry, recent events and future work plans. He also introduced the “Macao Global MICE Partners Alliance Program” and the “Macao International Convention Bidding Support Scheme”, with the goal of advancing the internationalisation, professionalisation, and market-oriented development of the MICE industry. To attract more high-quality MICE projects to Macao and the Co-operation Zone, the “Global MICE Partners Alliance Program” is open to international entities and service providers interested in hosting/organising MICE events in Macao This mechanism allows shared access information of the Macao MICE market and the global MICE network resources. Members can also enjoy the bidding support exclusive in Macao and Hengqin.

IPIM acknowledged the need to enhance local MICE industry stakeholders’ competitiveness in bidding for international conferences. To create better conditions for securing high-quality international conferences, IPIM will launch the “International Convention Bidding Support Scheme” to improve local sectors’ capability in bidding for international conferences, in order to create more favourable conditions to introduce more international conventions to be held in Macao and eventually boost the development of the relevant industrial chains.

Director of the Industrial Development Bureau of the Co-operation Zone Wu Chuangwei and multiplerepresentatives were invited to attend this meeting. Several committee members proposed recommendations regarding mutually complementary advantages of Macao and Hengqin MICE sectors, maximising the function of the MICE industry in terms of “promoting investments through exhibitions”, and the cultivation of MICE professionals.

The Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions will continue to maintain close communication with relevant government departments and industry stakeholders to carry out strategies for the development of the MICE industry, accelerate the implementation of policy measures, and inject new momentum into Macao's MICE industry through international co-operation and regional synergy, thereby driving appropriately diversified economic development, and enhancing overall competitiveness and international influence.
